Action research and counter-planing in Rio
Action research and counter-planing in Rio
Lecture and discussion with Malte Warburg
Time and venue
25 October, 12:30-14:30 in building 10.1
Malte's lecture will be based on his thesis for Plan, Town and Process and is about how a local area, in collaboration with two universities in Brazil, created an alternative plan for urban development. The reason was that the city council had proposed the total demolition of the district in connection with the forthcoming Olympics in Rio.
Community Planning as Resistance to Forced Removals, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This lecture investigates community planning in the context of mega events and forced removals, specifically in relation to the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio. Malte will argue that community planning can be a powerful political strategy for localized action. However, it is also highlighted that the planning process is often non-linear, conflictual and ambiguous. Furthermore, the presentation will include a practical assessment of community mapping as a method for empowerment and knowledge creation.
Malte works as a secondary school teacher and is currently writing a textbook on urban sociology.
