The economic crisis in the global economy: A gender perspective for recovery and sustainability

Ruth Pearson, University of Leeds, U.K.

This talk examines the impact of and the responses to the economic crises post 2008 from a gender perspective. There have been wide differences in terms of the impact of the crisis on different countries within and between the global north and south.

Most industrialized economies have deployed a range of instruments, which in general have favored moves towards recovery in male employing sectors in spite of clear evidence that austerity measures have impacted most severely on women's employment.

Feminist economists are calling for recovery strategies that reject austerity and prioritise investment in the social infrastructure. It is essential that the post crisis economy is focused on balance between different sectors and age groups in society; sustainability requires a more equal distribution of income and services rather than endless unequal economic growth.
