PhD defence by Kristian Fahnøe

Kristian Fahnøe will defend his PhD thesis: Tørstige sjæle. Et studie af governmentality som interaktion på en døgnbehandlingsinstitution for alkoholmisbrugere [Thirsty souls.. A study in governmentality as interaction at a treatment centre for alcoholics]

Summary: The thesis is an ethnographic study of social work in an treatment centre for alcohol abusers. The thesis examines how social work unfolds as various forms of management intended to shape both the residents and the social workers. In order to study management in face-to-face interaction, the approach to governmentality is developed as interaction that combines Michel Foucault's governmentality with Erving Goffman's interactionism. The approach refines the understanding of resistance, as well as the understanding of how the management of individuals unfolds in the interaction in different ways and with different effects. The thesis shows that the management is diverse. It focuses both on residents and social workers, it contains several goals and occurs through different techniques, which both support and obstruct each other. It also reveals how management in the specific interaction is created in an interplay between attempts to control and resistance to these efforts.
