What is a moderated list?

When a list is moderated, it means that a group of moderators read the mail that is sent to the list and decide whether the mail should be sent to the list or should be rejected. The purpose of the moderator function is to reduce the amount of spam on the lists.

There are some general recommendations in order to make it easier for the moderators. Naturally, it is up to the users themselves to specify the guidelines.

1. If the subject is Subscribe/unsubscribe or something like 'I would like to subscribe/unsubscribe', then it should be blocked.

2. Renting and sub-letting of rooms/apartments should be blocked. The mailing list markedsplads@ruc.dk can be used for this purpose. However, the renting of master project offices are welcome on some mailing lists, unless it obviously comes from "Big Business".

3. Mails complaining about spam should be blocked.4.

Advertising and information about events that are not RU-events or study-relevant for the list should be blocked. The mailing list markedsplads@ruc.dk can be used for this purpose.

5. Job notices are usually welcome, as long as they are study-related.

6. Sale of diverse things, including study-related books, should be blocked. The mailing list markedsplads@ruc.dk can be used for this purpose.

7. If there are many addresses with *-stud@ruc.dk in the to-field, it may be spam. However, this is far from always the case.

There will always be cases that are unclear, where it is difficult to decide if a mail should be blocked or not. I would recommend that in these cases the moderators should contact the study board for the relevant subject, who can then take a decision on the matter.

Contact helpdesk(at)ruc.dk, if a mailing list requires a moderator.
