Why can't I send email?

For reasons of security it is necessary to be logged in to RU's SMTP-server and use SSL for at kunne sende postto be able to send email, unless you work from a computer registered at RU's network.

Usually, this will have consequences for those students and staff, who uses the wireless network Plug'n Study-net, or work from an internet connection at home or outside of RU's campus.  If you have problems sending mail, and you receive the error message We do not relay non-local mail ... it is because you have to set up your mail program to use RU's SMTP-server smtp.ruc.dk with SSL and user authentication. The majority of mail programs are easy to set up. See Setting up your email.

If you continue to have problems, it may be because your internet service provider has blocked out-going mail from port 25 and you should configure your mail program to use a different port-number (465 or 587). It could also be an anti-virus program that is blocking the sending of encrypted text. In this case, you should turn off virus checking of sent mails.

You will always be able to send mail using Webmail. The only problem that could arise here would be opening the compose window. To solve this your browser needs to be set to use Active Scripting.

If you still have problems, contact helpdesk(at)ruc.dk.
