iPass
iPass is a service for travelling employees who can get access to the internet through a local line - all over the world, easily and safe.
What is iPass
iPass is a system based on a broad network of providers from all over the world. It is designed to provide easy access to the internet for the individual user. iPass can offer cheaper phone costs because, by co-operating, various internet service providers all over the world can acquire economies of scale.
An iPass client (iPASSConnect) that is adapted for the Research Net (Forskningsnettet) is installed on the PC, Mac or PDA that the user has brought along. Afterwards there is easy access from practically anywhere in the world. Since the call takes place via the client, the user gets the same screen image every time a connection is to be established and the user only has to provide his location, after which the iPass client displays a list of local access points. Calls can also be made without the client software, so it is possible to connect with all kinds of equipment.
The client can be downloaded here.
In concrete terms, the connection is made either by means of a modem call-up, an ISDN connection, an Ethernet or wireless network (Wi-Fi).
The client contains a telephone book, which can be used anywhere in the world to find and connect to the nearest internet service provider that is affiliated to the iPass-system. The telephone book is updated automatically, every time a connection is established.
Installation
Installation takes place by contacting helpdesk(at)ruc.dk. Before each installation the individual member of staff must obtain the necessary permission. The person authorised to sign the permission e-mail to helpdesk(at)ruc.dk with details of the name of the staff member, the relevant account number and for how long the permission is to apply.
The account that is to be used for iPass has a user name in the following format: ruc[nummer]@fsk.net for example ruc00011@fsk.net. The password can be changed and an overview of the user's usage is also available here.
Payment
iPass logs information about each call, and UNI*C sends monthly invoices to RU with information about user ID and about the type, location and duration of the connection. Unless the internet service provider has a "reverse charges" number, the subscriber pays the local rate for the telephone call to the internet service provider.
The bill is passed on to the account registered for the individual member of staff.
