When the PhD dissertation is nearing completion, it is important the PhD Supervisor is notified so that the process of contacting the potential members of the Assessment Committee can begin. The PhD defense takes the form of a public lecture. During the defense, the PhD student is given an opportunity to review the work and defend the thesis to the members of the assessment committee. After the public lecture, the PhD student must undergo an examination by the assessment committee. The person chairing the defence may permit other persons present to make a contribution during the defence.

The defence normally include the following:

• Introduction by the chairman who is often the director of DSSG
• Lecture by the PhD student
• Break
• Q&A session between the assessment committee and the PhD student.
• Questions ex auditorio
• Deliberation by assessment committee in private
• Announcement of conclusion of assessment
• Reception in honor of the student sponsored by DSSG
