Coaching
What is coaching?
Coaching is a means of getting help to improve or strengthen your English. The precondition for coaching is that the individual who requests coaching, participates actively in the process so that you can continue to develop your language skills independently. In other words, through a dialogue with the coach, you clarify what you need to work on and how you would like to realise your collaboration with the coach. You will also discuss how to reach your goals.
A series of coaching sessions may be realised in a short, intensive period or as sessions spread out over a longer period. Coaching may take place individually or in small groups, in which the participants work with a common language issue.
A series of coaching sessions will begin with a meeting, at which the participant through a dialogue with the coach establishes what language issues to work with. The coach responds with one or more suggestions on how to plan the course of progress. The participant and coach then agree on a practical schedule and specific dates for meetings. At the end of the period, results are recapped and a general plan on how the participant can continue to develop his/her language skills, is devised.
Who can request coaching and what is the procedure?
Coaching is offered to all academic staff (VIP) at RUC. Prior to a series of coaching sessions, the member of staff must apply for approval at their department.
If you are interested, you may request an appointment for an evaluation of your needs. Then it is estimated how much time is needed for the participant to independently develop his/her skills. It is expected that a coaching period will usually consist of 1-2 hours up to 6 hours. For an appointment, please contact Therese Hauge, ext. 3234, thehau(at)ruc.dk
In some cases it may turn out that a series of coaching sessions is not as suitable for strengthening the participant’s English skills as participation in one of our regular courses.
Usually, you must expect particularly limited options during the periods when most of our regular courses (TAP as well as VIP) are running.
Examples of coaching sessions
- Guest lectures at RUC or abroad
- Research presenation (~ paper presentation) abroad either individually or by research group.
- Teaching in English at RU or abroad (as guest teacher, for which you cannot practice before leaving)
- Current subjects presently taught in Danish, which are to be offered in English in the future - needs analysis on training in English
- Examination - oral examination of international students at RUC
Note: Above list is not exhaustive; a lot more scenarios could be added. If you are uncertain whether or not your scenario is suitable for a series of coaching sessions, please contact Therese Hauge, ext. 3234, thehau(at)ruc.dk
