PhD student's learning process and learning environments

The purpose of the course is to make the PhD student aware of the PhD process as a process that can entail major changes and which must be managed in a way that maintains the student's enthusiasm and helps them to cope with the workload.  The purpose is also that the PhD student shall relate consciously to the range of resources made available to them in their work with the PhD project.

The course focuses on the various challenges encountered by PhD students throughout the PhD process. Across the studies and experiences of PhD students, it is possible to identify different phases in a PhD process, each of which contains elements of stress and excitement. Different types of work (theoretical, empirical, methodological, dissemination, etc.) each require their own special attention, and planning and consistency are therefore essential in the PhD process.

The course will also discuss the various learning environments and resources with which the PhD student engages and which they can utilise in the work on their PhD project. Seminars, conferences, study groups, courses, study abroad, research groups etc. all constitute a comprehensive framework for the learning processes associated with completing a PhD study programme. The various learning environments and resources represent a variety of potentials that can support the PhD students' learning processes, and the students can decide themselves whether or not to utilise these resources.
