The relationship between PhD supervisors and PhD students
The purpose of the course is that the PhD students relate to PhD supervision as a working relationship that should get off to a good start and act as a support for them throughout the entire process. There will be a discussion of how various stages in the PhD process can present specific requirements for the PhD supervision, and it will be discussed how different types of supervision can provide different types of coaching and support for the work on the PhD project.
The PhD supervisor is absolutely essential for the PhD programme. The relationship between the PhD supervisor and the PhD student is a meeting between two people, each with their own personal style, ways of working, professional preferences, etc. Both parties have a responsibility for establishing a fruitful relationship, and it can be a good idea for PhD students to clarify what they expect from PhD supervision. A key element of this clarification is a conscious approach to the student's needs and how their past experiences influence the student's wishes with regard to the PhD supervision and the PhD supervisor.
PhD supervisors have different ways of providing supervision and the way in which they support the learning process may differ from student to student. There may be advantages and disadvantages associated with the various approaches to PhD supervision - and there may even be a concept called 'good' PhD supervision?
