General requirements
The general requirements for admission to the master’s programme are:
A bachelor degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor degree within the field of study of the master’s programme.
Students who wish to apply for a combination master’s programme must have an educational background which is relevant to both subjects of the combination. If this is not the case the student, if generally qualified, will be required to do prerequisite studies at bachelor level within the subjects for which the student is not fully qualified. To find out more about this requirement please read more about prerequisite studies below.
Fluency in both spoken and written English. The level of English required is equivalent to:
IELTS: 6.5 or
TOEFL paper-based: 550 or
TOEFL computer-based: 225 or
TOEFL internet-based: 80
Applicants whose native language is English or applicants whose first university degree was completed at an English speaking university need not enclose a proficiency test. Documentation regarding this must be enclosed.
The above-mentioned requirements will determine whether or not you are qualified for admission.
If a programme has more qualified applicants than spaces available the Study Board can include the following criteria when screening the qualified applicants:
- Your overall marks in your bachelor degree as well as your marks in subjects specifically relevant to the applied programme.
- Your personal motivation where you describe your interest in and ambitions concerning the programme. Make sure you are fully acquainted with the programme you apply for when you write your motivation and be specific rather than general when you describe your interest in the programme. The motivation must be in your own words.
- Recommendations from referees as further documentation of your academic qualifications.
Each Study Board might have different priorities when assessing the additional criteria. To find out more you should contact the department where you wish to study.
Some Study Boards might invite students to additional interviews. Please contact the department where you wish to study to find out more.

Prerequisite studies
Students who wish to apply for a combination master’s programme must have an educational background which is relevant to both subjects of the combination. If this is not the case the student, if accepted, will be required to do prerequisite studies at bachelor level within the subjects for which the student is not fully qualified.*
An example: A student who holds a bachelor degree in Chemistry applies for the combination of Chemistry and Environmental Biology. The student is fully qualified within chemistry but lacks knowledge of biology and she is thus required to complete one semester of biology at bachelor level, before she can begin her master’s programme.
The number of courses (ECTS points) required at bachelor level depends on an individual assessment of the student’s educational background. It will normally be between 5 and 30 ECTS points per subject.
When the prerequisite studies have been successfully completed at Roskilde University, the student will automatically be admitted to the master’s programme. A new application is not necessary.
If a student is required to do prerequisite studies, this will always be outlined in the letter of acceptance.
If a programme has more applicants than spaces available, students who are fully qualified within both subjects will be preferred to students who need to do prerequisite studies.
* Please note that Roskilde University cannot admit non-EU/EEA citizens to a master's program with the requirement of prerequisite studies, if they need to apply for a 'residence and work permit for students' for these prerequisite studies. This is due to the fact that non-EU/EEA citizens cannot be granted a residence permit based on prerequisite studies, as it is considered a part-time education.
The fees for the prerequisite studies are:
Prerequisite studies within Arts or Social Science 1500 EUR per 30 ECTS
Prerquisite studies within Natural Science 2700 EUR per 30 ECTS
