Studies in Chemistry

Chemistry is a fundamental subject in natural science. It deals with the structure and properties of materials and substances and their conversion into other substances. Almost everything in our environment is associated with Chemistry, and chemical concepts are essential to our understanding of nature. Chemistry has important interfaces with Physics, Biology, and Geology.

Teaching and learning is organized through courses and project, the two types of elements in the programme.

The courses have relatively small classes with lectures, discussions in class, problem solving activities and laboratory exercises.   Project work takes place in small groups with study of the literature, laboratory work and discussions in the group with and without a supervisor.

Project work

By doing a project you are supposed to dive into a particular problem of your choice with certain limitations. (Read more about the purpose of the single project under projects)

At the beginning of each semester a ”project market” is arranged where project groups of 3-5 students at the same level are formed.  The project market is organised by  a coordinating supervisor. The projects are of course formulated according to the students’ individual interests.

Course work

A course is typically a three hours session with two sessions a week, in the morning or in the afternoon. Each session is a mix of lectures, discussions in the class, student contributions agreed upon and work on case studies and problems. Some sessions take place in the laboratory and may last longer, usually an entire afternoon.
