Combine Chemistry with other exiciting subjects at Roskilde University
Chemistry can be combined with all other subjects on Roskilde University, but some combinations are more used and natural than others. Especially combinations with biology, physics and mathematics are straight forward.
Chemistry and Molecular Biology
This combination opens for a deeper study of the connection between chemical studies of structure/dynamics and biological function. The combination is rather straight forward and very popular. With this choice of subjects the candidate will have many skills like a biochemist and have good job opportunities within the medical and food industry.
Chemistry and Environmental Biology
With this combination the student will have the ideal tools for working with environmental problems from either a biological or a chemical view. The focus is within analytical chemistry and biochemical/toxicological methods in laboratory courses and in project work. The education aims at jobs within environmental science and environmental monitoring institutions.
Chemistry and Physics
This is a strong combination leading to studies within the big borderline between physics and chemistry, where a considerable development is progressing. The courses in these two subjects greatly supplements each other, as the physics delivers the fundamental theory that support chemical models and methods. The project work can as a starting point use the ongoing research collaborations in the department. The combination is a good platform for (PhD) studies within “Soft material science” and the candidate will have very good job opportunities in the gymnasium (High School).
Chemistry and Biology aiming at gymnasium/High School teaching.
Within this combination a tuning of chemistry towards education is a highly relevant option. As this combination has been rare on other Danish universities, there is a lack of teachers with this obvious combination of subjects. As with other combinations of chemistry with biological subjects it opens up for integrated projects.
Chemistry and Mathematics
Mathematical knowledge is a prerequisite for a deeper study of many theoretical chemical problematic. Complicated differential equations are present within subjects such as reaction kinetics, quantum chemistry and statistical methods for analysis of experimental chemical results. Within the description of the symmetry of molecules, group theory is indispensable. With mathematics in combination with chemistry, you have the special tools for studying theoretical chemistry. Also this combination leads to good job opportunities within Gymnasium/High School.
Chemistry and Computer Science
Chemical experiments often produce huge numbers of experimental data and effective sampling and proper data treatment requires good knowledge in computer science. On the other hand the theoretical chemist often develops and optimizes algorithms and programs for specially demanding calculations eg. within quantum chemistry and physical chemistry. With this combination you can work with the application of computers for data sampling and control of chemical apparatus or with development of software for different tasks within chemical research and development.
Chemistry and Geography
This combination is perhaps not the most obvious at first sight, but it is actually very useful. This combination governs the study of geological form and occurrence of the elements and their chemical compounds, their use, the position of chemical industry in relation to water supplies and population density, recipient and soil properties in connection to waste deposits. All of these subjects are naturally treated under this combination.
Chemistry and History
Chemistry has as one of the oldest natural sciences a rich historical tradition with many interfaces to natural philosophy and technology. Old Greek speculations and even prehistoric technologies gave birth to chemistry. The study of the history of chemical and technological development can clarify interesting aspects of the interaction of natural sciences and society. The combination of chemistry and history is unconventional, but with good job opportunities within the *gymnasium/High School.
Chemistry and Danish
Danish in combination with chemistry focus on problems concerning the relation between natural sciences and technology on the one hand and language, communication and social processes on the other. In the communication of chemical scientific language it is necessary with a proper understanding of the special expressions within chemistry and natural science. Chemical concepts and the naming of chemical compounds is a special linguistic problem. The combination is well suited for the gymnasium/High School.
Chemistry and Public Administration
This is a combination between two educations with highly different theoretical foundations and it can be a challenge to bring context to the study. The combination qualify to deal with economical and management problems within the medical and chemical industry.
Chemistry and International Development Studies
Today it is of vital importance for the “Third World” nations to be able to select, adopt and apply modern science based technologies. The chemist Roald Hoffman expressed this in this way: “Development in our time is inseparable from scientific advance”. The combination of chemistry and International Development Studies are specially suited for studies of the role of chemistry in the development process eg. in connection with agriculture, industry and environmental problems.
Chemistry and Communication studies
This combination also requires acquisition of different language and models. In the public, chemistry is often associated with unnatural processes, additives and pollutant chemicals. With the many chemicals in our daily surroundings there is enough subjects within communication of chemical information to the public. Starting with the dissemination of chemistry is the obvious way to build this combination. The combination could lead to jobs within information and documentation.
