About Computer Science

Computer science is about computers, programs and data. You learn how to develop IT systems which are both functional, solid and safe, but also useful to the people who need to use them.

Computer science is a research area in continuous development. Due to the vast spread of computers the narrow view of the subject computer science where focus is mainly on the premises of the computer is no longer enough. Focus on how the computer influences people and the surrounding society and vice versa is important as well, thus are the perspectives of the social sciences and the humanities relevant.

At computer science, you receive a deep theoretical and methodological understanding of computer science’s core material. You learn how to combine theory, method and the practical application. At the same time, you learn basic programming, information structuring and design. You learn how to go from productdescription to action plan; how to find the best solution to a problem; how to test a finished system.

You use these competences to specialize in a personally chosen subject. Projects and different courses add up to RU’s usual freedom in regards to specialization. A few examples of subjects you can choose:

  • Robot technology
  • IT systems in health care
  • Smartphone apps in events.
  • Digitalization of private organizations.
  • Artificial intelligence.
  • IT safety.
  • Computer games.
  • IT and digital signature.
  • Much, much more.

You can read about competences and potential jobs in our section about Career and Competences.
