Cultural Encounters - a flexible combination

What makes Cultural Encounters special at Roskilde University is the fact that it is possible to combine it with all the study programmes offered at RU - making it possible to create your very own and unique profile.

Below we have listed a few of the most preferred combinations that are also offered in English:

Cultural Encounters - Communication
The media in Denmark is to a large extent in need of qualified people who are competent in handling issues, news and developments related to the multicultural and internationalized society, not just in relation to Denmark, but generally. Therefore, this combination will qualify you for researching, analyzing, interpreting and disseminating all kinds of situations that deals with cultural and ethnic questions, integration, internationalisation and intercultural communication and understanding. This could for instance be analyses of the media's treatment of the multicultural and multilingual society, or it could be analyses of racism and neo-racism, or analyses of the cultural and social dimensions in conflicts around the world. It could also be analyses of the communicative needs of different target groups, e.g. the needs of ethnic minorities. It would also be relevant to work with communication, the media and news coverage in relation to the cultural area in a more artistic, aesthetic way, as well as the correlation between cultural politics and other political areas.

Cultural Encounters - English
The possibilities and conditions for combining Cultural Encounters with English are the same as those for combining the subject with another language, e.g. German or Danish, both as regards the field of research but also in terms of the theoretical and methodological aspects. However, there are a number of special issues that are relevant to note when combining Cultural Encounters and English. These are mainly related to the fact that the English language and the English-speaking cultures have held a dominant role in the majority of the colonization and decolonization processes in modern history, and the cultural identity formation or the break with the latter can be studied in this connection (postcolonial studies), as well as the fact that the increasing globalisation, for good or bad, has made English into a kind of international lingua franca.

Cultural Encounters - International Development Studies
In both these study programmes, the theory of globalisation is central, and the combination of these two subjects may permit a broader approach to the complexity of the modern/late modern/postmodern world, both socially, culturally and linguistically. You can study more general issues concerning cultural globalisation and 'global culture' and more ethnographically oriented issues concerning social interaction, discourse and identity formation. Special research areas could include racism, theory of integration, ethnic equality, the human possibilities and problems in connection with migration, global diasporas and their internal networks and intercultural communication. Other themes could be cultural and linguistic consequences of colonialism and imperialism, postcolonial studies of identity and cultural forms of expression. Another area could deal with cultural and linguistic problems in connection with the cooperation in international organisations, e.g. the UN, the EU and NATO.
