About English
English is the globalised society's dominating language and the English and American culture, literature and politics are to a large extent part of the global agenda.
The study programme English at Roskilde University comprises linguistic theory, language policy, written communication, cultural communication, translation studies and literary studies. Geographically, the study programme covers the UK, the USA and the Postcolonial countries, however, the interaction between English and Danish, i.e. the culture of the 'English-speaking world' and the Danish culture also plays an important role in this study programme.
English is a diverse and flexible study programme. You can tailor your education to match your own interests and professional goals. The study programme is centered around the English language and you will achieve a competence in English that reflects a dual focus on form (personal proficiency) and content (key knowledge areas). This will make you an English-language expert in a society, where the majority of the population is 'good' at speaking English. Thus, you will become a qualitatively better English-speaker who has competencies in linguistic and literary/cultural analysis and communication.
