The 1st MA module in English focuses on text and society. You will work with both literary subjects as well as economical, political and social issues within the three geographical areas: the UK, the US and the Postcolonial countries.

This module contains six courses and one or more specialized topics as well as project work.

Course in English grammar:
In the course in English Grammar, you will obtain detailed knowledge about the grammar of the English language and you will become proficient in grammatical analysis so that you can analyze complex linguistic structures.

Course in British Studies:
The course in British Studies is concerned with the relationship between literature, culture and society and the historical development in Great Britain and Ireland.

Course in American Studies:
The course in American Studies focuses on aspects of the literary, social and cultural history of the United States, as well as American history, political institutions and social issues.

Course in Postcolonial Studies:
The course in Postcolonial Studies offers insight into the literary, social and cultural relationship and the historical development of the British postcolonial countries.

Course in English Phonetics:
The course in English Phonetics will improve your oral proficiency in English since you will learn about phonemic transcription. You will also learn to master the articulation of the English phonemes and you will obtain a basic knowledge of prosody and develop your ear for observing and analyzing dialects.

Course in Communicative Translation, Danish/English or English/Danish:
In these courses, you will learn how to translate a source text from Danish to English or from English to Danish so that the translated text is adapted to a different purpose and/or a different target audience.

Specialized Topic:
In the Specialized Topics course, you will investigate a defined topic within either the linguistic/communicative area or the cultural/literary area.

Project work:
Your project work consists of a project synopsis which must be related to either British, American or Postcolonial Studies.

Choice of study and qualifications:
Your choice of courses in this module will qualify you for the direction you choose to specialize in.

If you opt for a career as a language teacher (e.g. Danish high school/'Gymnasium' teacher), you must chose English Grammar, English Phonetics plus the three area studies (British, American and Postcolonial Studies). For more information about how to obtain high school teaching qualifications, please see here.

If you aim at becoming a cultural analyst or intercultural communicator, you can combine two or three of the area studies, plus e.g. English grammar and one or two Specialized Topics.
