Career and Competencies

With a Master's degree from Roskilde University where English is one of your subjects, you will obtain excellent language and communicative abilities. At the same time, you will gain competencies within cultural, textual and literary analysis in an English-language context and you will be trained in cooperation and problem solving as well as communicating your knowledge to different target groups. These competencies are valuable in a large panel of job positions.

Traditionally, the education within the English study programme is directed at teaching, especially in high school/upper secondary school, but with an MA in English you can also find many relevant positions outside the educational sector. If you aim at becoming a cultural analyst, an obvious possibility is to get a job as an information officer in a public or private organisation, or as translater in a publishing house or copy writer in an advertising agency. Moreover, with the extensive knowledge about British, American and Postcolonial culture and social relations, a Master's degree in English can lead to work as a consultant in export companies, journalist in international news coverage or perhaps caseworker in an international development programme.

With a Master's degree combining two different subjects, your job possibilities will also depend on which other subject you choose to combine English with. For instance, if you combine English with another 'gymnasiefag' (i.e. another subject which is taught in the Danish high school/upper secondary educational system) and you choose the components in the English study programme which qualifies for becoming a language teacher, you may apply for jobs in the Danish educational system (Gymnasie/HF). For more information about how to become a high school/upper secondary teacher, please see here.
