English - a flexible combination

What makes English special at Roskilde University is the fact that it is possible to combine English with all the study programmes offered at RU - making it possible to create your very own and unique profile.

English - Business Studies

The past couple of years, many students have chosen to combine English with Business Studies. In addition to the knowledge about and proficiency in the English language, the study programme English offers competencies within discourse analysis, textual analysis and comparative social and cultural analysis in relation to Denmark and Great Britian as well as the other English-speaking countries. English also offers insight into theoretical and practical research questions pertaining to intercultural communication.

This combination qualifies students to manage communicative tasks in the international cooperation between public and private companies, organisations, interest groups etc. Project examples for this combination could be: analyses of international publicity and information campaigns, annual reports (in English) from Danish multinational companies or employee magazines (in English) from international companies.

English - Communication

English can give the subject of Communication a concrete problem area concerning the issues that arise in connection with the internationalisation of both economy and institutions or in connection with the media and its treatment of national culture at an international arena. The Americanization of mass communication and the entertainment business in Europe are only the first examples of the development which is now worldwide and very powerful. 

With this combination, project work could deal with comparative analyses of the television structure in Denmark, Great Britain and the US in connection with the historical interplay between governmental/public and private/commercialised television. You could also supplement the more practically oriented Communication subject with analyses of the media content in the English-speaking countries (news coverage, TV series, commercials etc.) or with linguistic analyses of oral communication (e.g. Reagan's political speeches).

English - Cultural Encounters

English is the subject of language and culture and therefore it has obvious possibilities when combined with Cultural Encounters. For instance, cultural  and identity formation in relation to gender, race and class are issues that are high on the agenda in both the UK and the US as well as the rest of the English-speaking world. Moreover, the English language and English-speaking cultures have played a dominant role in the majority of the colonization and decolonization processes in modern history, and the cultural identity formation or the break with the latter can be studied in this connection.

Furthermore, for good or bad, the increasing globalisation has given English the role of a kind of international lingua franca. For instance, many 'expert' and other (sub)cultures now meet with English as their common spoken language and this English-speaking dominance has extensive consequences both in relation to the national cultural contexts as well as the cultural encounters in the various transnational communities where the communication takes place. Both English and Cultural Encounters deals with the connection between language and identity in relation to the nation and the national culture.

English - German
