Why interdisciplinarity and project work?
At RUC, we believe that problems in the real world rarely can be solved using only one academic discipline. That is why RUC’s academic and educational profile is based on interdisciplinarity being a cornerstone in scientific innovative approach and innovation.
We also believe that the best way for you to acquire knowledge and experience as a student is to study the problem areas that interest you. For this reason, the studies at RUC focus on problem-oriented project work.
Interdisciplinarity – unique competencies
Interdisciplinarity is about crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries and creating different scientific traditions for how to work together in untraditional ways. This you will learn in your Basic Studies programme, which in itself is an interdisciplinary study programme. Here, each advanced-level course within your main subject area forms part of wider academic, scientific and societal contexts.
When you choose your advanced-level courses after your basic studies, you can combine two courses for your further bachelor or master’s programme. The courses are equal, and therefore they are equally balanced in terms of contents and time. You will gain insight and qualifications within the two courses which can be very different, and it provides you with quite unique interdisciplinary knowledge. You become a creative and innovative academic offering the skills required by today’s society.
Project work, participant direction and joint responsibility
The basic educational principles at RU are problem-oriented project work, participant direction and joint responsibility. From enrolment to graduation, you are trained to assess the importance of academic problems and the relevance of selected theories and methodologies on a scientific basis. Project work is participant-directed and is run by you and your co-students’ commitment and own and joint responsibility.
Your phased choice of specialisation is based on your experiences with the problem areas of the individual courses and scientific approaches. You gain your first experiences at the basic studies, which point you in the direction of the advanced-level courses, where many different specialised course studies may be combined within and across disciplines and main subject areas, both during the bachelor studies and the master’s studies.
At RUC, you are responsible for and in charge of your education yourself. Based on your own critical sense and active participation, you are guided through a study programme at RUC which offers an internationally, interdisciplinarily and educationally challenging environment providing the perfect framework for your studies.
