Study Structure and Teaching Method

At RUC, Environmental Biology can be studied at both the Bachelor and Master level. As for most of the other study subjects at RUC, it is required that Environmental Biology is studied in combination with another subject (e.g., Chemistry, Geography, Molecular Biology, Technological and Socioeconomic Planning, etc.), and as for all other subjects at RUC, the student must first complete a two-year Basic Studies program as a part of the Bachelor degree.

1. module:

Bachelor in Environmental Biology. The Bachelor program is three years and consists first of two-years of basic studies (typically the Natural Sciences Basic Studies Program), followed by a third year, during which the student studies Environmental Biology and another subject. In the natural sciences, we have arranged the study plan such that the two subjects are studied in parallel during the third year – that is Environmental Biology is taken in both the 5th and 6th semesters. In the Natural Sciences Basic Studies Program (i.e., the first two years) students take 4-5 biologically oriented courses, which partly function as preparation for studying Environmental Biology.

2. module:

Master in Environmental Biology. The Master program is two years (one year for each of the two chosen subjects), and thus consists of one year of Environmental Biology. During the Master program in Environmental Biology students take a number of specialized courses and conduct 1-2 projects (depending on whether the student chooses to perform their Master’s project in Environmental Biology or in the other chosen subject). A prerequisite for being permitted to start in the Master Degree program in Environmental Biology is a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Biology (from RUC or another university) or a Bachelor Degree in a related subject. Students applying for acceptance to the Master Program in Environmental Biology with a Bachelor degree in a related subject will be subject to review by the Study Board who will decide whether the student can be accepted directly or whether they are required to undergo an induction period. In most cases, the induction period consists of one extra semester’s study. It should be noted that students must cover the cost of the induction period themselves.
