About Informatics
Informatics is a comparatively new subject provided at RUC and it deals with design and implementation of it applications.
IT plays an expanding role in our society and private lives which means that there is a need for people working with IT in various contexts.
Informatics gives you the skills to understand the possibilities and limitations attached to the implementation and application of IT in terms of public administration, private companies, the health sector, education or cooperation relations in a company, to name some examples.
You will learn how to implement and modify IT systems in order to achieve the wanted adjustments and changes in the organization. You will also learn how to make the user’s requirements understandable to the programmers. You will learn how to create user surveys that take into consideration needs, possibilities and limitations. In short, you will learn how to connect IT with the surrounding world.
A degree in Informatics from RUC gives you the opportunity to shape your study by choosing your bachelor study, second subject, courses, project topics and collaborators during your time of study, both fellow student as well as external organizations.
The core areas of Informatics
The headline of Informatic’s core area is design and implementation of IT applications containing the following items:
Bachelor’s degree:
- Project management.
- Modeling knowledge and information.
- IT in an organizational context.
- Implementing IT based on existing frame technologies.
- System development with emphasis on pre-study and requirement specifications.
- IT strategy as well as change and organizational management.
- Evaluation of IT applications.
- IT security and system architecture.
- Information management.
- IT applications within specific domains.
Master’s degree
- IT strategy as well as change and organizational management.
- Evaluation of IT applications.
- IT security and system architecture.
- Information management.
- IT applications within specific domains.
The phrase ”design and implementation of IT application” covers, for instance, innovation processes, including analysis and evaluation of existing systems, as well as analyzing the needs within system applications in e.g. supporting working procedures.
These processes also include preparing strategies for changes, both organizational as well as IT related. This could take the shape of developing new working procedures or expanding and adjusting a system portfolio to the present needs. To a large extend, Informatics means modeling the use of information technology as well as organizing projects of implementation and change in companies.
Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) is another aspect of the core areas of Informatics, and it deals with design and evaluation of user friendly systems. Mastering HCI makes you the link between programmers and the people using the systems.
