Combining Informatics with other subjects

IT is vital for the society we live in. It is difficult to find one field where computers and IT does not play an expanding role – as method, tool or as an object of examination. This means that IT can be beneficially combined with almost every other subject. These are the most popular combinations:

Informatics – Communication

Studying communication as your minor gives you the qualifications to analyze application context and design innovative, digital solutions which communicate e.g. academic knowledge to various target groups and which makes communication, cooperation and knowledge sharing easier and more practical. You will be able to think in terms of IT solutions designed for those who need them. You will, among other things, work with communication through websites, development of systems of knowledge sharing, internal IT communication in companies, etc.

Informatics – Computer Science

Studying computer science as your minor provides you with a profound and broad education in IT. You will obtain a computer scientific knowledge on constructing software as well as an “informatic” knowledge about how to design and implement IT applications. Within Informatics many cases may occur where a specialized knowledge of technological aspects is useful, just as there within computer science may be a need for “informatic” knowledge on design, application context, planning and organizational implementation. Computer Science and Informatics illustrates 2 sides of the same field and are thereby subjects which supplement each other very well.

Informatics – Business Studies

Studying business studies combines the understanding of the internal structure of a company with the processes and knowledge of design and implementation of IT applications in an organizational context. Here you are given the opportunity to work with change and organizational management regarding implementation of IT systems in a company. You deal with technological, managerial, economical, administrational, and commercial issues, and you analyze the interaction between these issues and the IT application in companies. You can also choose to engage with the application of IT from the perspective of the company and its specific needs and the improvements it wishes to achieve.

You can also focus on the use of IT in companies where the employees and the management are involved and engage with the working procedures, the commercial priorities and considerations as well as the values valid in the company. Finally you could engage in IT as knowledge sharing, project management, team work or competency development.

Informatics – Technological and Socio-Economic Planning

Studying this combination lets you work with modeling, designing and implementation of IT solutions and the use of IT regarding planning, political, environmental and technological issues. You can also focus on IT in an organizational context and e.g. engage in the implementation of new systems and their effect the work life, or learn how to design and implement IT systems with regard to specific work environmental issues in an organization. Another focus can be the information technologies’ influence on the living conditions of human beings. It is possible for IT to improve the living conditions for marginalized groups in the society, e.g. through web based communication tools which give lonely and shy people the opportunity to communicate with others in the same situation. It is also possible to work with design and implementation of IT applications regarding registration and supervision of environmental issues and changes, or preparing visions and specific strategies for the future development within a Tek-Sam area, and how IT systems could support achieving this.

Those are just examples. Read about other subjects (and combinations) here.
