Applying for a Visa (Residence and/or work permit)

Once you have been accepted to RU and have paid your tuition fees, the RU Admissions Office will send you the ST1 Form for applying for a residence permit for Denmark. The procedures vary depending on your nationality.Especially students from outside the EU/EEA should be aware that the residence permit must be applied for from your home country. There are also certain "proof of financial means" requirements that must be met and should be investigated before the application process. Non-EU/EEA students are not automatically granted a work permit but may apply for one for up to 15 hours work per week during the semester and full time during the summer holidays.

Students who need to apply for a residence permit for Denmark should notice the following:

  1. In order to apply for a residence permit for Denmark, students must document that they have paid the required tuition fee. If you have been granted a tuition waiver you must instead document that you dispose of DKK 4.200 per month (in all DKK 50.000) by including e.g. a bank statement in your own name or documentation for a grant or scholarship.

  2. You cannot apply for a residence permit for Denmark before you have received the admission letter and the “ST1” form from the university.

  3. The processing of your application for a residence permit takes up to 3 months. This means that you must apply for a residence permit immediately after receiving the documents from the university in order to receive your permit in due time before coming to Denmark.

  4. In order to apply for a residence permit, you must pay a fee to have your application processed. Please follow the three steps of the application process, as described at this site: www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/fee/fee.htm

  5. The Danish Immigration Service will not process your application for a residence permit before you have paid  the required tuition fee. If you have not paid the required tuition fee one month before the semester starts, the university will annull your admission.

  6. With the letter of admission and the “ST1” you can only apply for a residence permit from the day your studies commence. The university cannot help you apply for a residence permit for an earlier period

  7. With the letter of admission and the ”ST1” you can apply for a residence permit for studying at the university which issued the letter of admission and the ”ST1”. If you are no longer actively studying at the university you cannot uphold your residence permit. The university will inform The Danish Immigration Service if you are no longer actively studying at the university.

  8. The students themselves are responsible for the application process. The university has no influence on the process.
