Admission to a PhD programme at Roskilde University requires a relevant master's degree with excellent results or qualifications that correspond to five years of study at university level. Applicants who do not hold a Danish master’s degree must be able to document academic qualifications corresponding to the Danish master's degree. When enrolled with a master's degree, the duration of a fulltime enrolment is 3 years.
Applications are submitted to the relevant Doctoral School. There is no particular application form to be completed when applying for admission to a PhD programme. However, applications should include a full project proposal, a review of the literature on the proposed subject, a presentation of methodology and a schedule for the completion of the project within the period of enrolment.
See specific requirements for admission to the PhD programme in the Rules and Regulations at RUC
Academic assessment of applications
All PhD applications must undergo an academic evaluation to determine whether the candidate is qualified. The assessment of applications is performed by an expert committee consisting of members of the academic staff from the relevant Doctoral School. All candidates receive an academic assessment of their application. Apart from the necessary academic background, each department individually assesses whether or not the applicant would be capable of completing the PhD studies taking into consideration academic as well as financial aspects.
Vacant PhD scholarships
Vacancies are advertised regularly on RU's website. There are no fixed deadlines. PhD scholarships are advertised either with a specific project or as a thematic proposal, where the student can define his or her project in relation to a research area.

Industrial PhD
An Industrial PhD project is a three-year vocational PhD programme where the student is employed in a company while enrolled at a university. The company receives a subsidy of 14,500 DKK each month for three years, and the university's expenses for supervision, etc. is covered by the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation. The PhD student works on the project fulltime in the company, and in principle shares the time equally between the company and the university. The parties involved in an Industrial PhD programme are generally 1 company, 1 university and the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation.
