PhD scholarships and funding
Below you can read about the various types of PhD funding. As a rule, you should always apply for advertised ph.d.-positions or scholarships. However, if you are employed by a privat company or other, there may be different types of funding relevant to your situation. Depending on which type of funding is relevant to your situation, please either contact Roskilde Doctoral Schools or one of the seven Doctoral Schools at RU.

The Industrial PhD programme
An Industrial PhD project is a three-year vocational PhD programme where the student is employed in a company while enrolled at a university.
The deadline for submitting applications for the Industrial PhD programme in the private sector in 2013:
- 7 January 2013
- 29 April 2013
- 9 September 2013
Public Sector Industrial PhD:
10 mio. kr. is allocated to the Industrial PhD programme in the public sector in 2013. The application deadline is 1st October 2013.

PhD scholarships funded by RU
In this type of funding the PhD student is employed by RU and receives his or her salary from RU during the 3-year period. The PhD scholarship is either funded by RU's own funds or by project funds from external partners. The PhD student is employed in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confideration of Professional Associations and the Danish State. PhD positions are announced at the university’s website.

PhD scholarships funded partly by RU and an external partner
RU and the external partner collaborates in the definition of a research project. RU and the external partner sign an agreement and share the expenses related to the course of the PhD during the 3 year period. In this type of funding, the PhD student is typically employed by RU. However, under special circumstances the PhD student could be employed by the company.
PhD scholarships funded by a company
The company pays an educational subsidy to RU, which covers enrollment, supervision, office space, subsidy to courses, etc.. In this type of funding, the PhD student is employed by the company but is enrolled at RU. The PhD student can be enrolled from 3-6 years in this type of funding. The duration of the PhD programme is decided upon prior to enrollment. If the PhD course of study is expected to exceed 3 years, the student is enrolled as a part-time PhD student at RU.
PhD funded by the student
In this type of funding the PhD student is not employed by RU, but finances the entire PhD course of study him or herself. This includes funding for educational expenses such as registration, supervision, courses, etc.. The educational costs is calculated to approximately 70,000 to 100,000 DKK per year (2011). In this type of funding, the duration of the PhD course of study is 3 years. Contact the individual Doctoral Schools for additional information about this type of funding.

Tuition waivered PhD
A tuition waivered PhD means that all administrative expenses associated with the PhD programme (enrollment, supervision, office space, educational materials, etc..) is covered by RU. A tuition waivered PhD does NOT include a PhD scholarship. Vacant tuition waivered PhD's are posted regularly on the individual Doctoral Schools' websites or on RUC's job database.

Guest PhD student
If you are enrolled in a PhD programme in Denmark or abroad, you can apply to come to RU as a PhD guest student for 3-6 months. As a guest you must be affiliated with a PhD programme that will host your visit. You must therefore contact the individual Doctoral School related to your research.

Salary when employed by RU as a PhD student
When you are employed as a PhD student by RU, your terms of employment follows the collective agreement between the Danish Confideration of Professional Associations and the Danish State. Please be aware that if you are employed outside the university (eg. by a company) your terms of employment will follow other agreements.
