The many worths of STS nature(s)? Latour and Thévenot in an acid bath of political ecology

STS preeminence Bruno Latour has long claimed the relevance of his actor-network theory (ANT) to political philosophy – and not least to those ‘questions of Nature’ raised by the political ecology of environmental movements. Ours is a time of ecologizing rather than modernizing, Latour claims; his ‘parliament of things’ responds to this sea-change. But just how convincing is Latourian political ecology? In this talk, I revisit the debate between Bruno Latour and fellow French pragmatist, Laurent Thévenot, on the question of ‘green moral worth’. In the process, it will become clear why Latour – and STS more generally – stand to gain in political relevance from taking an acid bath in Thévenot’s (and Boltanski’s) sociology of justification and critique.

Symmetriske og asymmetriske perspektiver på forskningskommunikation: Hulme, Luhmann og Latour om videnskabernes rolle i den aktuelle klimadebat og –politik

I foredraget analyserer jeg to perspektiver på videnskabernes rolle i den aktuelle klimadebat og -politik. Den asymmetriske tilgang placerer videnskaberne øverst i et epistemisk hierarki som leverandør af sikker viden, hvorpå vi bør basere vores handlinger. Mike Hulme, Niklas Luhmann og Bruno Latour vil blive inddraget som eksempler på en mere symmetrisk forståelse af, hvorledes videnskaberne bidrager til og vekselvirker med andre systemer/aktører i klimadebatten.

Public engagement: challenges to expertise?

In Denmark, participatory Consensus Conferences have been cultivated as a distinct model for engaging experts and publics in debates about science and technology. The paper investigates the cultural roots of this model and its particular understanding of expertise. This discussion then offers a basis for exploring the international uptake of this model. The paper argues that a basic anti-elitism is a constituent part of Danish culture and that it has been an important element in the institutionalization of public engagement. However, anti-elitist thinking also has the potential to be turned on the engagement-experts and result in demise for the Danish Model of participatory public engagement.

Turistdestinationens vedvarende tilblivelse

Inspireret af aktørnetværksteori tegnes turistdestinationen i multiple, flygtige og fikserende sociomaterielle tilblivelser. Turismesteder handles frem i komplekse, overlappende og nogle gange modsætningsfulde sociomaterielle relationer, hvor destinationen består af en multiplicitet af materielle, kropslige, sociale, forestillede og historiske sammenfiltringer. Et sted er ikke bare et sted, men både bestandigt og flygtigt: Turistdestinationen rummer et afgørende skæbnesvangert element; det er målet for rejsen, et fixpunkt der stabiliserer, men samtidig er stedet flydende og flimrende, en decentreret og flygtig størrelse som hele tiden bliver til på nye måder.
