Doctoral Workshop: Evening Session on Trans and Gender Studies

With the participation of Professor Susan Stryker, Arizona University (US)

Thursday December 8, 2011 from 7-9 pm, Theory Room, Building 3.1.5

The Doctoral Program of Intercultural Studies, Department of Culture and Identity, Roskilde University

Trans and gender studies have received an increasing attention within the field of gender studies for the past two decades. Scholars from transgender studies have raised important and critical questions about classifications of gender and have helped us to discuss identity categories within a continuum instead of staying confined within the dichotomy of two mutual excluding gender categories. Transgender studies theorists have paid a particular attention to the power relations that have granted the discipline of medicine and psychiatry almost monopoly when it comes to describing experiences of transgender people. They have also adressed important critiques of other normative institutions and discourses that lead to the erasure of the complexities of gendering and transgendering processes. The Doctoral Program of Intercultural Studies at Roskilde University has the pleasure of giving doctoral students an opportunity to work with one of these scholars, Professor Susan Stryker, in an informal workshop.

Send in part of your thesis or of another work in progress and enjoy the chance of a personal evening feedback session from one of the leading scholars within the field, Professor Susan Stryker.

Papers must be a maximum of 10 pages and has to be submitted to Heidi Bojesen, Head of the Doctoral Program of Intercultural Studies, on December 2 the latest (email: hbojesen@ruc.dk)

This event has been sponsored by the Research Group of Intercultural Studies, Roskilde University and Centre for Gender Studies, Copenhagen University, DIHR, Kvinder, Køn & Forskning and Koordinationen for Kønsforskning
