Konference: The Silencing of Violence Against Women
Auditoriet, bygning 25.2, RUC
This conference deals with gender, power and violence. The focus is on the relationship between the silencing of violence and women's experience of violence, asking who benefits from the silencing and who does what to whom? What are the bodily experiences of violence? What are the consequences of violence?
Domestic violence, like interpersonal violence in general, is often imagined as something out of the ordinary, a breakdown in the social order, something gone wrong. It also tends to be silenced, belittled and explained away. Part of the reason for such evasive actions may be that violence is unsettling and discomforting, and that it questions our basic ideas about relationships , marriage and family life. Another reason may be that violence challenges contemporary ideas about strong women. There is a cognitive gap between strong women and victimization that seems hard to overcome. And perhaps there is a general resistance to hearing any more about women victims of violence as such a perspective is believed to be outdated.
Keynote speaker Liz Kelly gives an insight into the theoretical field of violence against women in a historical perspective. Across Europe more women are now speaking publicly about violence. Yet some forms of violence remain more 'speakable' than others. The lecture examines the ways gendered violence has been framed as gender neutral, debilitating courses of conduct reduced to incidents of crime or 'risk factors', and certain forms of violence 'culturalised'. Practitioners and activists from Turkey, England, Germany and Sweden contribute with ground experience of the silencing of violence against women. The conference concludes with findings from a new study on violence against women in ethnic minority families in Denmark.
The conference is organised by Yvonne Mørck, Sofie Danneskiold-Samsøe & Bo Wagner Sørensen within the framework of Centre for Gender, Power and Diversity/CKMM
