Symposium on Reflexive Strategies

In collaboration with the NordForsk Network for the Study of the Dialogic Communication of Research (www.dialogue.ruc.dk), the research group organized an international symposium Reflexive Strategies for Collaborative Research on 29-30 October 2012 at Roskilde University to mark the publication of Louise Phillips, Marianne Kristiansen, Marja Vehviläinen and Ewa Gunnarsson (editors), Knowledge and Power in Collaborative Research: A Reflexive Approach, Routledge Advances in Research Methods, London and New York:Routledge, 2012.

There were 45 invited researchers from environments for research on dialogue, collaboration and knowledge production including research environments in Brazil, The Czech Republic, US, Canada, UK, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Finland. The symposium was designed interactively as a forum in which the participants engaged in dialogue with the book on the basis of their own theoretical perspectives and research experiences. Many of the workshop activities took their starting point in presentations by participants who commented on chapters of the book. Presentations were made by Werner Fricke, Institute for Regional Cooperation, Wrestedt-Emern, Germany; Laura Black, School of Communication Studies, Ohio University; Kathleen Gallagher, Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto; Olav Eikeland, Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Science, Norway; Birger Steen Nielsen, Department of Education and Psychology, Roskilde University.

As part of the symposium, we held a public event ”Beyond the Romance of Collaboration” with Kenneth Gergen, Senior Research Professor, Department of Psychology, Swarthmore College, President of the Board, The Taos Institute. Over 200 people participated in the event. In his talk, Kenneth Gergen took his starting-point in his reading of "Knowledge and Power in Collaborative Research"; this reading was then commented upon by Marianne Kristiansen (Aalborg Universitet/Kbh), Danilo Streck (Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos), Helle Nordentoft (DPU) and Louise Phillips (Roskilde University).
