Contesting news images: practices of falsifying visual representations at violent crises
Guest lecture: Thursday 31 March 2011, kl. 11 i 43.3.29
by Tamar Liebes, Professor of Communication, Hebrew University, Tel Aviv, Israel.
The lecture discusses how events that have been proved/exposed as false in various ways, are nevertheless cultivated and cherished in national, sometimes global, collective memory, thereby challenging the relationship among events, history and fiction. In the present media environment, it has become easy to believe in a fake story as long as it fits one's prior narratives. In the presentation I will (1) show how the history of falsified images is as long as the history of photography itself; (2) present a typology of falsifying stills and moving images; (3) explain how the new technological affordances enable professionals and laypersons to falsify images and how these practices challenge the credibility of professional photographers and editors.
