Statistics Course - January 2013
A Guided Tour of Essential Statistical Methods for Environmental Scientists
Aims and Content:
The course aims to provide an introductory overview of the most essential methods commonly used in the environmental sciences. The course will be structured such that participants switch between lectures, addressing the theory behind the methods, and practical computer exercises using relevant datasets. Should participants have appropriate data sets from their own research, they are encouraged to bring these for use in the practical exercises. Rather than provide comprehensive coverage of any single technique, the course aims to teach students how to identify the most appropriate technique(s) for specific types of data sets (including own results), how to test assumptions prior to analysis, and how to interpret the resulting statistical output. Guidance will be provided to assist students in finding references and software to address specific problems of interest for their own research.

Textbook: Quinn & Keough. 2002. Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists, Cambridge (ISBN 0 521 00976 6 paperback).
In addition, participants are encouraged to bring the statistics book that they currently use as a reference. Zar (1999) and Sokal & Rohlf (1995) can be particularly recommended.
Software: SYSTAT, EXCEL, PRIMER
Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that participants have at least some introductory knowledge of statistics (e.g., from undergraduate courses or own research). Familiarity with Excel would be of advantage.
Credits: 5 ECTS Credits
Evaluation: Active participation in all parts of the course and satisfactory completion of computer exercises is required to obtain a course certificate. Students are expected to read the assigned chapters prior to the lectures and should be prepared to have homework during the course.
Maximum Number of Participants: 15
