In the context of the current economic, political and social challenges facing the EU and many of its member states, a sense of crisis and fragility has become pervasive. For some, the EU appears to have entered onto a path of decline and disintegration. It may be, however, that we are witnessing a moment of ‘creative destruction’, or a critical juncture providing opportunities to positively respond not only to technical and institutional problems in the design of the euro, but also to protest and mobilisation around themes of justice and democratisation in the EU. At the very least we appear to be witnessing crucial changes in the institutional dynamics and constellations of power at the European level and new challenges in the terrain of external policies.
