From thousands of miles away for my commitment to life science

By Xu Jin

I am Jin. I come from Shanghai. Having experienced life and death, I decided to devote myself to life science study and research.

Seven and a half years ago, one summer night, I landed in Denmark with a handbag and an excited young heart full of the curiosity of the whole world.  My dream of studying abroad came true. Was it going to be another wonderful story of ‘Alice in wonderland’? No, it’s not a fairy tale, a voice told me.

The problem came right after my landing. One piece of my luggage was lost during the flight change, and I realized that I was wandering around at night Copenhagen. I did not know where to go with my heavy luggage. At this point, many nice locals kindly helped me with my heavy luggage on and off the bus. Finally, my very first day was ended in a cozy youth hostel, ‘ ni hao’, this was the warmest reception I received on my very first day in Denmark and I soon fell asleep. Good night, ‘sleep in heaven’ hostel!

The next day, I successfully reached beautiful Roskilde city and finally saw my dream university, Roskilde University. Everything would be fine.  The study secretary enthusiastically helped me to find a very nice student apartment. The missing luggage was soon delivered back to me by airport serviceman…

Time was always running very fast, I spent five years to finish the whole higher education program of chemistry and molecular biology at Roskilde University. It was an unforgettable experience under renowned professors’ supervision, the scientific and life support from Chinese professor, the exhaustive coursework, plus the fascinating research project would remain the highlights of my early graduate school days. I was luckily employed as a research assistant after graduation and completely involved myself in my beloved research area in immunology. Since my arrival in Denmark 7.5 years ago, I have enjoyed every moment of integration in the Danish society. I have learned Danish to a sufficient level, made great friends, and I am eager to give back to this society by my research enterprise.

Have I ever felt regretful about my decision to Roskilde University, to Denmark? No, I never, I never. It was still the same commitment, my commitment to life science, which brought me thousands of miles away from China to Roskilde University, to Denmark.
