My Experience at Roskilde University

By Zhongyu Wang

My name is Zhongyu Wang, I am 24 years old and come from China, I have a bachelor’s degree with a specialization in TekSam from RUC, and I pursued a master’s degree in TekSam in 2010.

It is undeniable that studying at RUC is beneficial. First of all, since 2007, my four years of undergraduate studies have enabled me to keep pace with the latest developments in academic fields by studying in TekSam, and the students are often invited to the academic presentations or meetings from PhD students, professors, etc. Secondly, I am enabled to discuss with my contemporaries all of the time, as the culture of critical debate in the Danish school system is one of the strategies I learned at RUC. I think I do practice and benefit from critical discussion, because at the beginning of my studies at RUC, I did not feel confident enough to speak at an academic English level, it is probably due to the background study in China. Thirdly, there is an atmosphere of enthusiasm for academic studies, I like the library very much, and not only the architecture, but also the system of the library, that makes the searching process easier. Plus, the campus has a good view of environment, which sometimes inspires me with some new ideas for my project. Finally, people at RUC are helpful when I had a trouble with my project, or personal matters.

While it is not doubtful that studying at RUC is beneficial, it inevitably carries an intrinsic defect. In order to defray a big amount of tuition fee and be financial independent, I have to exhaust myself to work in my spare time. Therefore, I always feel stressed during the intensive period of writing projects & taking courses, thereby I usually do not have time to attend academic presentations or social activities.

Nevertheless, as far as I am concerned, it is plain that the advantages of studying at RUC outshine any negative effects. I knew that RUC is famous for its group work before I applied to RUC, studying at RUC widens my horizon, enrich my experiences and improve my ability to cope with various problems that crop up in my future career and life, which are actually the most essential benefits I got from doing group work.
