Certification Practice Course: Teaching in English as an international language

Course description

The purpose of this course is to offer the university lecturer a series of practice seminars with language input relevant to teaching and to introduce them to the basics of the Roskilde University certification of teaching in English as an international language. The language functions of the certification will be presented in detail, and there will be ample time for each course participant to practice these language functions. Practice will take place in small groups as well as individually in plenum, and course participants must expect that short videos are recorded for learning purposes.

If the lecturer teaches (in English) simultaneously with the course, they have the opportunity to practice in their classroom too and bring back their experience and queries to share with their fellow course participants.

To accommodate to as many lecturers at RU as possible, the course consists of two parts. The first part consists of 5 sessions of three lessons each that are spent on focussing on the certification while the second part of another 2 sessions invites those teachers who would like additional practice and fine-tuning of language skills and more detailed feedback, to stay on.

When you register, please register for either the first part of the course or the full course as we need to know for practical as well as preparation purposes. If after the course has begun, you think you would gain from two additional sessions, please notify your instructor no later than at the third session.

Note also that if you intend to register for the certification in the autumn 2013, that you have a class to teach in English at least 1 week after the last session of the course. Register in good time as we may need to put lecturers on a waiting list.

You may also consider using the course in the autumn 2013 as your stepping stone to being certified in the spring 2014, or the spring course 2014 for certification in the autumn 2014. Again, consider registering for the certification in good time.
This course can be repeated each semester until you feel confident enough to register for the certification. You may also use it to support your teaching in English and you can combine both with a few coaching sessions in English and/or collegial intervision re pedagogical strategies.
