Aim and Content
The Programme will give you an understanding of the dynamic interplay between subjectivity and learning processes in human beings’ lives, and in relation to various types of learning contexts. The focus is on learners/learning subjects and how their knowledge, experience and identities are formed and modified within the social contexts of institutions and everyday life. The learning contexts can be formalised (e.g. kindergartens, schools, courses) or non-formalised (e.g. workplaces, spare time activities), and they can either support or constrain learning processes. Some of the dimensions of subjectivity which can be studied are gender, ethnicity and social class. You will get the chance to study a range of theories related to subjectivity, learning, and identity formation. In order for you to be able to construct and analyse empirical material from field work, you will get an introduction to methodology and research methods (interviews, observations etc).
The Programme comprises three distinct types of learning activities:
- Module seminar: these will introduce the overall themes of the programme and attempt to synthesize these into a coherent whole. A number of these sessions are to be held in conjunction with related RU teaching programs. Others will be held in the Department of Psychology and Educational Studies.
- Course in research methodology: this program will introduce key epistemological and methodological concepts to enable students to explore learning in educational and everyday life settings.
- Project: this is the core of the RU learning experience. Students will form groups based upon an agreed educational question or problem and work with a supervisor throughout the semester to complete a major project report.
